Between the World and Me
A grounded, concise description of life as Coates—one of the best American essayists alive—sees things. This book and the fatherly tone Coates takes while preparing his son for the injustice of being Black in America gave me several things I needed at once: one about racism, another about manhood, and another about fatherhood.
I purchased this, like so many other white people, in the summer of 2020; around the same time I bought The History of White People, although I finished that far later. The clear-eyed pessimism of this reminded me "My Dungeon Shook" from Jame's Baldwin's The Fire Next Time.
