Letter to US Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, NY-08

sent Jul 3, 2025

Hello Rep. Jeffries,

I want to express my concerns that the mayoral candidate from your city and your party, Zohran Mamdani, is being casually discussed by both the president and the Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem independently, ideating on how to get rid of him by any means in their power.

I'll include this section of reporting from The City to save you time:

“We have somebody running for mayor … that applauds the very same philosophy and people that did that,” Chesnoff continued. “We need to send a bigger message to the American public of the danger that poses.”

That comment appeared to catch Noem’s attention. Noem, whose department oversees the increasingly militarized deportation raids frequently led by masked people who hide their names and badges, said she’s looking for creative ways to expand her power.

“The Department of Homeland Security has authorities that have never been utilized before … and I’m going to need some good minds on how to use those authorities,” she said. Her comment comes just one day after Trump, speaking from a new mass immigration incarceration camp quickly built in the South Florida swamp, threatened to jail Mamdani if he attempts to stop Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the city and disparaged him as a “communist.”

If Mr. Mamdani is harmed, stripped of any rights, or god forbidden anything worse, it is on all of us, but especially on people in power. This administration's ideation on how to ruin the political ambitions of a US citizen, based on false premises of both his religious and political ideology, is dangerous to all of us, including you and me. So it is critical that you not feed into McCarthyism and islamophobia. Your tepid stance on supporting the candidate from your own party and their right to try governing is aiding the Trump administration in laying the groundwork for his abuse. Please use your voice to protect the rights of him and any other progressive American to have a political career. It is essential. It is a fight you can win.

Thank you,

Frank
